John Cain is a partner and the director of plumbing and fire protection engineering with Dunlap & Partners Engineers. His experience includes more than 30 years of design and project management for diverse projects including new construction, additions, and renovations of office buildings, primary and secondary schools, university systems, healthcare facilities, laboratories, and performing arts centers. He is a Certified Plumbing Designer and has deep rooted experience in all aspects of plumbing and fire protection design, including domestic water systems, water heaters, and booster pumps; sanitary systems and sewage ejectors; storm water systems; sump pumps; natural gas systems; acid resistant piping; laboratory clean water, compressed air, vacuum, and gas systems; medical gas systems; fire pumps; and automatic sprinkler and standpipe systems, and clean agent extinguishing systems. John received LEED Accreditation in 2008. He is active in the American Society of Plumbing Engineers and the National Fire Protection Association and has recently been appointed to the City of Richmond, Building Code Board of Appeals, Plumbing Division (Professional Engineer).
John is professionally licensed in Virginia, North Carolina, Pennsylvania and Maryland. He received his BS in Education from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University.
John likes to work with his hands and lives the motto “I can do that.” In his spare time, he can be found working on various projects around the house or tinkering with his Audi A4 Convertible. He also plays the guitar and finds Sudoku puzzles truly relaxing. You can often find John and his wife Tracey at the VMFA where they enjoy perusing the exhibits.
