Engineering Services   -  Transportation

“You Can’t Get There from Here” is not Dunlap & Partners Engineers’ motto.  For over 30 years our engineers have helped design airports, train stations and transportation maintenance facilities. The Richmond International Airport Expansion put “Richmond on the Map” by creating interest in airlines that had never flown out of Richmond such as Jet Blue.  Some of our other Trains, Planes, and Automobile stories are listed below:

Dulles International Airport, Aircraft Rescue & Fire Fighting Facility
Chantilly, VA
New facility housing 5 apparatus bays, dormitory space, kitchen, 80 MHz communication system, cascade system and administrative areas.

Richmond International Airport, Terminal Expansion
Richmond, VA
M/E/P/FP design of 4 gate concourse expansion and additional baggage claim carrousel in 1994, new public garages in 1996, new rental car deck in 2000, new 8 gate concourse in 2002 and renovation and modification of terminal to separate arrival and baggage handling from departure with ticketing and security. New central utility plant and new FIS facility.

Reagan National Airport, Aircraft Rescue & Firefighting Training Facility
Arlington, VA
Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering design was provided for a new 22,000 SF, two-story training facility.  The facility is used to simulate aircraft fires and rescue procedures.

Delta Air Lines – HVAC Upgrade
Atlanta, GA
Upgrades to the HVAC systems at an existing maintenance facility were required in order to enhance the indoor air quality with respect to ventilation and filtration modifications.  Gas phase filtration was utilized in new air handling equipment to remove odors and control the building’s pressurization.  The filtration system provided a more comfortable environment for the maintenance staff and resulted in increased productivity.

Long Island MacArthur Airport, New Concourse – South West Airlines
Islip, NY
M/E/P/FP engineering services for a 60,000 SF addition to an existing terminal building for a new 8 gate concourse.  The expansion plans provide for a new baggage claim wing, ticketing wing, and gallery area.  Central systems upgrades included new boilers, a chiller, a cooling tower, emergency generator, fire alarm and access control systems.  The client required that the airport remain operational at all times so careful coordination with existing services and operations were critical to the success of the project.

Tobacco Row Parking Deck
Richmond, VA
Design services for a two level parking deck for mixed-use development by Forest City Development.

Amtrak Station
Kannapolis, NC
Renovation of historic train station in downtown Kannapolis, N.C. Spaces include two holding areas, ticketing, concessions and loading platform.

Amtrak Main Street Station
Richmond, VA
Dunalp and Partners provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection for this 1901 historic railroad station.  A U.S. National Historic Landmark, Main Street Station ceased providing train service in 1972 due to the James River flooding caused by Hurricane Agnes. To make matters worse, the station was damaged by fires in 1976 and 1983. Main Street Station saw no rail passengers until 2003, when it was renovated and returned to service, reopening on December 18, 2003.

Norfolk International Airport
Norfolk, VA
Complete lighting and diffuser renovations throughout the entire length of both concourses. New lighting systems included full digital operations and programmable control capabilities.
